It's picky, yes, but valid markup is picky. If you do not want to specify a background color, your valid solution would have been:
background-image: url(../images/logo.png);
background-repeat: no-repeat;
The valid shorthand solution:
background: #fff url(../images/logo.png) no-repeat;
